MY FRIDAY FAVORITES

BLOG POST

BOOK CASE
Sherry Hart shows how she displays a bookcase, step by step. She is the queen of bookshelves!! A post worth reading.

ROOM

BLUE BEDROOM
Jennifer from the Pink Pagoda blog posted this image, and I fell in love with the room and the fabric. I found out later in the week the fabric has been discontinued so the hunting began, need I say more?

SAYING

ATTENTION

OUTFIT

leopard coat.

OUTDOOR SPACE
Garden gate as a planter, brilliant idea! also the fabulous garden path and all the beautiful plantings!!!
Love the plant hanger on the gate.

DIY WORTH DOING

Map #decoupage on wood #letters that spell out beach. More decoupage ideas on Completely Coastal: http://www.completely-coastal.com/2012/06/map-decoupage-ideas-for-canvas-dressers.html
The reason I named this, “Worth Doing,” is because I am not much of a DIYer so it realllly has to be worth it for me to do it.

I think this would be such a fun summer decorative item if you used a portion of a map that showed one of your favorite places to visit in the summer. Mine would have to be Carmel, California. What would yours be?

HOUSE

Low country cottage, love this style of home shell and chinoiserie: Seaside style with an Eastern accent

RECIPE

RECIPE
Next trip to the grocery store I am getting the ingredients for this delicious  recipe.

HEALTHY LIVING

Once a week for 20 minutes, sit in a hot bath that contains a handful of Epsom salts, 10 drops of lavender essential oil, and a half cup of baking soda. This combo draws out toxins, lowers stress-related hormones, and balances your pH levels. ~ Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D.
Detox with a 20 min bath of lavender oil and soda.

A Busy Brain = TROUBLE!

My brain is busy today, but I am not, so that is a formula for getting into trouble!!

Today seems to be a day of many thoughts going on in  my brain. Of course it all has to do with decorating, well, at least mostly.

Today's thoughts consist of:

How to ask Hubby to paint my little childhood desk cream without him saying NO!!…

magazine basket 026 (394x800)_thumb[2]magazine basket 014 (600x800)_thumb[2]
( when I was a little girl this desk was painted almost the same depression era green as my cabinets)

Let’s go outside for awhile!

I am trying to figure out how to light the pergola above the fence.

Backyard 024 (600x800)
(I think using some strip lighting hidden on the cross board on the top might just do the trick.  I would love a little hanging lantern, but not enough head room.)

Since I am thinking about lighting, how about the
lighting for my two  vintage outdoor neon letter P’s.

Backyard Blues 018 (800x600)
letter P 003 (800x600)
(Live-in handy-man trying out different spots on the back wall to hang my newest letter P)

letter P 001 (600x800)
(Getting a little less happy with each time I ask him to move it, go figure!)

Now I am jumping into thoughts of my bedroom! Let's go back into the house and down the hall to my bedroom......

Wanting my capiz hanging pendants hung above my nightstands. I have had these for almost a year, they are still in the box!

New Bed 010 (800x600)
 Won't they be pretty!?

How about a little catalog shopping!?

Still hunting for round mirrors for side of bed, (wisteria has the perfect one’s, waiting for them to go on sale!)

I am thinking of two mirrors in different sizes  stacked one on top of the other similar to the above picture. I would use the smallest size and the one on the bottom in this image.

Here are the two sizes and styles.......

This one is only 10.5 inches.

This one is a little different and measures 15.5 in. in diameter.

I have recently sent away for three more pillow fabric swatches for a summer look, more on that later. I am now onto plan C!!

Do your thought processes jump around like mine do?

UN-DECORATING!

ornate mirror + chic console + bright colored ottomans

UN-Decorating is actually not a word, I made it up because I think it explains a very important Design process that we often refer to as EDITING!!

Often times when we think of design, or decorating we think of all the additions we will add to a room.

Coastal Style: Hamptons Style in Black & White
Most designers will tell you it is actually  more important what you don’t add to a room that will make a room look well designed.

There will always be two camps when it comes to editing, those who like a more-is-more look, and those that like a big is better, less is more look.

In both cases editing, or Un-decorating needs to take place to have a cohesive look.

Comfortable arrangement

Editing is not always easy to do, especially when you have a picture in your mind how you think  the addition of a certain element will work in the room.

The new element might be a piece that you just purchased, and have wanted for a very long time, but once in the room it feels as if everything needs to change.

If you find that you are having to change everything in a room over, and over to try, and fit the one piece in the room, it is not right for your room.

Good Life of Design
In my own experience, while consulting, and in my own home, I have found that it is not a good idea to keep adding more to a room just to make it look different.

What winds up happening is you end up with a room that has no flow, and it just looks cluttered.

Absolutely, positively gorgeous living room by Steven Gambrel.
Take a look at one of the rooms in your house that you would like to freshen up. Be honest, be strategic, start pulling out some of the unnecessary objects that make the room too busy.

Designed by Sherry Hart Design Indulgence. Love the use of color and textures, great displays in the bookshelves and on the mantel

Keep in mind the eye needs to have a place to rest in the room, Not every wall has to have something on it. If you put something on a wall, or any surface it makes that wall or suface important. It is saying STOP and look at me.
Chances are you need to do some editing if:

When looking in your room, your eye jumps from one area and object to another. There should be an easy flow to the room, nothing jolting.

Remember, you want to be able to look at your room as a whole picture not individual snap shots from one area, or element to the next.

Is it time for you to do some editing in your rooms?
