How I Came up with my “Next” years Christmas decor

When I decide to decorate for Christmas I  start by finding elements that I am attracted too. Then I decide on what colors will complete the look in my home.

I usually find something that inspires me the year before, and I think about throughout the year. It is fun because if I see something that will complete the look I am going for I can get it ahead of time.
Last year I was inspired by the dining room with Angel wings on the chairs………

This was my interpretation………..

As  bloggers we are all inspired by what we see in blogland, and on the internet. We creative types can’t help but create new ideas in our minds and in our homes.

This is year is no exception, I am already being inspired for next year. This is how my thinking process goes………

I started seeing a consistency  in the elements that I liked so, I start a file of those images. Next year when it comes time to decorate  I will already have somewhat of an idea of the direction I am going.

I think it is a good idea to line up the elements, then I can see how they need to be connected, by color and design.

This year I have been drawn in by stars……….

I actually had this image from last year. I think this is the one image that really drew me in and made me want to decorate with stars.

This image shows  Monrovian stars. This is another image that really made me want to use stars for next year.

I am especially drawn to the Monrovian stars with all their points, they just fascinate me.

I love the bucket that is used to hold the tree.

Speaking of buckets it reminds me of galvanized metal which reminds me of tubs full of presents!!

Another darling idea using tubs. This is more of a coastal theme.

This is so clever and I love it!!

I also love the idea of putting the tree in an oversized basket. I think the rough texture would be a nice contrast to the shine of the silver trays!!

The use of silver trays is also appealing to me.

This would be nice in a silver tray. I really need to learn how to do calligraphy, or better yet, find someone to do it for me!!!

This next element is something I just love and never seem to think about until it is almost too late. Thank goodness we can now buy them already blooming……..

I have many more images for my inspiration, but I think you can get a good idea where my brain is headed…….

  • Stars
  • Buckets
  • Galvanized tubs
  • Silver platters
  • Chalkboard
  • Baskets
  • Paper whites

With all of these elements in mind I think I might be using a green, silver and white color scheme next year!

By making a list of elements and having images to refer too, you can almost automatically come up with a color scheme that will work.

The stars are the theme and the buckets, platters and baskets will give me a variety of textures. The paper whites give me a good color scheme to use as my base. Of course there will be a bit of black thrown in there in the form of chalkboard, which will work perfectly since I already use that in my kitchen!!! Yay!!

I think I am good to go, and will have a fun time throughout the year pulling my elements together!!! I told you all, I love this time of year!!!

Hi Kathysue...

Ohh my...sooo many beautiful and inspirational Christmas spaces! Thank you for sharing them with us, my friend! I'm loving that gorgeous Christmas table centerpiece that you created! Love mercury glass and paired with all the beautiful crystal...well, it just looks so elegant and magical!

You know, I do the very same thing. I start a new file every Christmas and I start planning for the next year's design. I already knew what I wanted to do at my place by the end of Christmas last year! It just helps keep the "stress factor" of the season at a minimum when you know what you want and what you're doing! Hehe! Thanks for all the great tips!

Well sweet lady...warmest wishes to you and your family for a wonderfully sweet and blessed Christmas!

Love ya,
Chari

I am stunned! once Christmas is over, I really don't want to think about it until next November! Even when there are unbelievable after Christmas sales on decor items, I often walk away. BUT your post inspires me and I may be open to sale items that speak to me. I need a plan, however. Would really help if I knew I wouldn't change my mind between now and next Christmas. And I am famous for that!

Hi Kathysue,
I love how you find inspiration for all of your projects and how you share your thoughts and ideas with us.
I haven't even started thinking about next year, although every year I wish I had planned way ahead. You are smart to do so.

I haven't finished this year, and you are already planning for next. Intimidation!
Better plan for a little "elf" in that decor!
Have a great day.

*** OK, Kathysue, MOST of us are still trying to "finish up" before Christmas arrives (and is too quickly "over"!), and here YOU are planning for NEXT year??? "Ouch!"... (But w/ grins!)...

Soooo, it's no WONNNDER everything you present is soooo uber-wonderful... you TAKE THE TIME to really PLAN & THINK ABOUT THE FINAL PRODUCT!!! I think about it all, for several months, then seem to just drift off in the wrong direction (actually, it's usually a "new " one!) when I start seeing magazines, old pics I've copied for inspiration and BLOGS LIKE YOURS!!!

It's ALL SUPERB!!! So glad you share! Many thanks!!!

What a wonderful idea, Kathysue, to decide a year in advance and pick things up the entire year as you go! Makes holiday decorating even more fun and thoughtful!! Love your ideas!

What fabulous inspiration pics. I am leaning towards a rustic, homespun Christmas for some reason. But, since my goal is to spend very little money and use what I have, there is no telling what I will come up with. LOL

I know whatever you do, it will be done with style and grace. I can't wait to see what rabbits you pull out of your hat. xx00
