"WINTER BIRD" DECORATING PLAN FOR CHRISTMAS

I thought it would be fun to do a few post on Christmas decorating plans for you to access.

For today’s Christmas theme I chose to work off of what I already have as a base for 2013 Christmas for my own home.

By showing you this, it will give you an idea of how to add different elements to a base to achieve a totally different look.

Remember my Base?……..

Ribbet Edit 2013 Christmas Inspirationa

Now let me show you how I can use this same base with a different theme……

WINTER BIRDS

COLORS:

Black
White
Blue
Green
Red

PATTERNS:

Stripes
Faux Bois
Birds

Ribbet Edit Christmas birds

In the above image you can see the wrapping papers and a Winter bird theme starting to form.

Now let’s make a list of elements that could possibly tie in with the above look.

ELEMENTS:

Birds
Branches With or Without Berries
Birch logs
Pine boughs
Red berries/Cranberries
Snow
Baskets

Next comes the fun part!!

SOURCING!

Sourcing is just a technical word for,“SHOPPING!” It just sounds a bit more professional, don't you think?

BIRDS
As you have already seen in the above image I found some darling Winter bird artwork on Etsy….

I think this is going to look great in a simple black frame placed on a mantel or the wall.

BRANCHES AND BERRIES
This one can be a no-cost element by going out in your yard and snipping off branches.

But if you want red berries on your branches you can find them HERE!

BIRCH LOGS

I love the square birch covered vases.

Nice looking 9in zinc lined birch covered vases.

If you don't have access to white birch logs you can actual order a stack of 6 logs  from the above source.

Here you they used birch logs, an old shutter and poinsettias.

I would use a wooden box in place of the shutter, and the poinsettias would be replaced with natural greens and red berries with white twinkle lights. Big, massive and so easy to do!

PINE BOUGHS AND BERRIES/CRANBERRIES

Easy, cheerful and full of life!!

BASKETS

Natural, Fresh, and cheerful. I would use solid red velvet ribbon to add more contrast.

If you don’t have a basket that is large enough Terrain has done all the work for you.

I purchased this a few years ago when it was on sale and I am so glad I took advantage of the sale. They go quickly so if you want one you had better order it now.

GIFT TAGS AND WRAPPING PAPERS

Don’t forget you can add more of the above elements in  the form of gift tags and wrapping paper as well.

Etsy is my go-to source for gift tags, but you Diyer’s could make your own.

Tips to Remember:
When working with a theme try to keep your elements down to 3-4 elements. It is easy to get very carried away, and then you create a cluttered look instead of an easy flowing creative look.

Be strategic where you place your themed décor. Don’t have it EVERYWHERE in your rooms. One or two spots will keep it fun and interesting.

YOU WON'T GET THIS OFFER EVERYDAY!

If you are having a hard time coming up with ideas this year. Leave a comment  on what you would like me to tackle for you, and I will do my best to write a post that will be helpful to you as well as my other readers.

This is the first Christmas post I've seen and I'm getting excited. Sadly we move the week before Christmas so my decorating will have to wait until a few days before, which is not my usual style and it will be agony not having anything in the house until then. But at least I can enjoy pretty posts like this!

HI:

Love this post, I have a question regarding basket fro Terrain, can this be used with a real Christmas tree? What size can the large accommodate? I remember loving this basket on your prior post.

Thanks,

Marianne

Kathysue, when you say stick to 3 or 4 elements in the theme, what is the definition of elements? Do you mean the birds as well as the texture, colors?

Kathysue, When you recommend to stick to 3-4 elements, what is the definition? In other words, what are the 3-4 elements of your theme? Do you include the color and textures, materials as the elements?

Thank you, Beth

Beth,
Great question. The elements would cosisit of anything that is your focal or theme. For me it would be my Jingle bells, sheet music and silhouettes, as you can read in previous post.

The winter bird theme is a bit different because really I am just using BIRDS, but if I threw in, more wildlife it could work, such as small woodland creatures, maybe an owl and a deer. They go with the bird theme. Just make sure the other elements have some connection to your main focus, in this case Birds.

As far as colors go. I recommend having a consistent color base that will go from room to room. In my case it is Black and white with blues and greens. I could put a pop of red with Black and white, green and red in an adjacent room.

Remember you want continuity and flow, no jarring to the eye.
Hope this answered your question.

I LUV this because that is what I did for a Christmas past. ETSY is a fantastic place to get bird pillows and I had a bird, butterfly, bows tree. Eeeek...hard to stop... franki

We have the loveliest snowy bird tray for the holidays that would fit this theme beautifully! And we love the Terrain basket - such a different way to showcase a tree.

Hi Kathy Sue! It's been a while since I've visited, and I'm so glad I did today. I enjoy your blog so much. I have changed blogs a few times (remember Sofas and Sage, and then House and Home Defined?) Anyway, I'm glad to be back reading and catching up on past posts! You always inspire me, and I'm making a commitment to get back to my old favorites and comment, too. ;-)
