Are You An Observer Of DETAILS!?

If you have read it once you have

probably read it a thousand times!!

I don’t know about you all, but when I look at an image of a well decorated room I study the image.

What I am looking for are the DETAILS!

DETAILS  will make an ordinary room become a well designed room.

(DETAIL: the Greek Key trim at the bottom of the drape)

With the onset of Pinterest we all have a plethora of images to study.

What I do first is skim the images by color and feel. If those two elements are appealing to me I will then stop and scan the image closely and look at all the details.

(DETAIL: mitered stripe on top of ottoman)

I don’t have to necessarily love the room, or style for my own home. If it is designed well it is worth stopping to study.

I am looking for textures, placement of furniture, or elements that are special, like subtle details in the millwork, or upholstery.

(DETAIL: Contrast cord welting in blue.)

It is usually the subtle details that really can pull a room together.

There are so many layers in a room, and to orchestrate a well appointed room all the details must be addressed.

(DETAIL: Simple Greek Key applique on the sofa pleat)

DON’T FORGET………

Next time you see a room you love, STOP and study all of the details, make note of what you love in the room.

By doing this you will start training your eye to see a room differently. You will see more than what is obvious, and apparent to anyone who glances at the room.

.Keep a running list of the DETAILS that you seem to be attracted too.

This technique will help you when it comes to decorating, or planning your next redesign.

I have learned, over the years that I am attracted to
contrast, and love elements that are outlined.

I am drawn to contrast cord welting on furniture, borders on a drapery, or even a border on flooring, or mouldings on a wall.

What Design DETAIL do you seem to love whenever you see it in a room?

If you would like to see more of the DETAILS that I am attracted too, go to my Pinterest board.......

I totally see what you mean. My daughter is an interior designer and I am always amazed at the difference in what we see in a room. She is all detail and I never really get past the "feel" of the room. Great advice!

Cheers to the details. I am obsessed with them and often see things others don't. I do think the details are what takes something from beautiful to spectacular.....yep they definitely make the difference!

I'm a detail observer too, which is why I see rooms broken down in vignettes. Same with clothing. I am attracted to clothes that have special details, like unusual buttons or stitching, etc. Mies said "God is in the details!" ~Delores

Totally Agree!
Details make a room POP!
I love to look at the "details" the photographer has changed in the room for the shot, when different angles of the same room are shown! That's fun and challenging. Nothing to do with the design of the room, simply a game I play!!

Yes, details that support the theme, elaborate on it, surprising the senses!

Like you I love contrast welting on furniture. It just seems so blah and unfinished without some sort of accent that outlines the shape and form.

Absolutely! I love checking each aspect of a room. Great post!

We're so into details - almost to our detriment! What we're loving these days is a touch of gold or brass in a room. Something so warm about the color!

Yes! It IS the details and layering as you stated perfectly:) Teaching our eyes and mind to see the detail takes practice! I'm still learning .. every day.

It is all in the details. But I don't recognize them unless someone asks me why I like something or even someone. It could be in the cording of a pillow or a sweet gesture that someone makes. Have a wonderful weekend, Kathysue!

I am not an observer of details - at least I never was until I started learning from you! I wanted everything to match because I thought that was the sign of a well groomed room. Since reading your blogs, every time I enter Home Goods, I think, "What would Kathsue say? Would she approve of this?" THANK YOU for your expertise, your selfLESSness and for decorating my whole house via your blog and Pinterest!!

Totally agree that it is all in the details! I love textures and pulling together patterns that might not imediately be seen as matching. And I'll admit, I have a little obsession with mitered stripes at the moment!

I "study" my shelter mags over and over...I am drawn to lines in furniture and how they relate to other pieces in a room... artwork is another "accessory" that I study..placement, colour, inpsiration. oh...and textiles... be in curtains, floor covering..furniture dressing..love textiles!
