Playroom Reveal!!

The playroom has been done since Easter!!! Or at least almost done!!
It has been a busy couple of months around our house so there was a delay in getting the images posted.
I am finally doing it today, whether it is totally ready or not!!!

As many of you already know I have three grandchildren that I get the privilege of having visit my home, and stay with me from time to time. I have a designated room for them that we call the playroom.

Hubby and I recently did a make over on the playroom. The kiddos are getting older and needed a hang-out room for older kids!! Since I have two grandsons and one granddaughter the room had to fit for both genders.

Today I will show you the room done with the boys in mind. This is actually how I keep it most of the time except when my little girly-girl comes to stay, and then PINK is added!!!

Remember all of these fabrics? I already had the pillows. The top pillow is from Tarjay. The second pillow is a Nautica pillow sham on clearance for $5.99 from Homegoods. The next pillow is also from Homegoods.

The large polka dot is from Ikea as well as the small dotted fabric on the bottom shelf. The awning stripe and plaid are from Robert Allen fabrics.

PLAYROOM fabric combos boy girl 003 (600x800)

All of these fabrics turned into this……….

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 004 (800x600) (800x600)
Notice I finally made a choice on the letter, “P” color!! Not navy, not cobalt somewhere in between!! The little love-seat turns into a full bed for sleeping.

Reading Nook
fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 008 (800x600) (800x600)
Everyone’s favorite spot, the reading or sleeping nook!! The curtains close for a little hideaway spot. You will notice no hardware on the drawers. We did this intentionally because that would create a ladder for little feet to crawl on, and would eventually compromise the integrity of the drawers.

The base is actually a portion of a captains bed that my hubby made for my oldest son on his 9th birthday. My son will be 39 years old this year! It is a sentimental piece for our family so we were so glad to be able to use it.

I found a special surprise on the platform of the bed when we took it apart. My son had written his name. Like my hubby said, “It is part of the family!” One more piece of molding is going to be added on the wall to the right to make it more finished looking.

On the right side of the nook you will see frames with artwork from each of my grandchildren. This has always been here to honor their creative side!

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 007 (354x800)
(these are their latest creations)

Above the rail I am getting the word, “read” in cursive. I am not sure if I will be painting it white or the same blue as the big two foot letter,  “P” above the sofa. Right now I can display books on the top rail…..

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 011 (800x600) (800x600)
A close-up of the pillows. I will be changing the tie-back it is too harsh for the curtain fabric. Still thinking about that one!!!

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 012 (800x600) (800x600)I had the cushion custom made with a lime green cord welting. I love the pop it gives to the crisp navy and white awning stripe.

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 013 (600x800) (600x800)
(notice the one basket with the striped cuff? I still need to make the cuff’s for the other natural colored baskets)
This is looking from the door. The book shelves will change according to which guest is spending the night, adult, boy or girl. On the right of the sofa it is set-up for an adult guest, see the towels?

I added baskets for storage, and to add texture to the room.  I chose a natural weave and a fun lime green basket. I also have some blue tin buckets for storage to add another texture.

I am a lover of numbers and letters. Throughout my home you will see the letter, “P” displayed. The “P” is the first letter in our last name. I purchased these darling zinc numbers 1-2-3, because I have 3 son’s and 3 grandchildren!!!

fINISHED PLAYROOM Guest room 001 (800x600)
I purchased these from My Sparrow Stylish Responsibility

(you can see a glimpse of the floor pillows that match the nook cushion perfectly. I purchased these from Ikea at $14.99 each!! I did a happy dance when I found them.)
I keep this pillow combination  for most of the time except when I have a little girly-girl staying, then we bring out the pink!!!! I will show that set-up in my next post!!!!

All the grandchildren saw the play room at Easter, and I must say that is what made it all worth it. They made comments like, “awesome”, “this is so cool,” and “It is like our very own little living room!”
My granddaughter grabbed a book and opened the closed curtain of the nook only to find my oldest grandson inside already there!! She promptly got in there with him!!

(my oldest Grandson reading Nate the Great)

When I took my youngest grandson in to see the room I told him, “Do you want to see your new room?” We went inside and he started giggling and jumped up into the nook with big smiles.

Afterward he started opening all the other bedroom doors. When I asked him what was he looking for, he replied, “Where is #1 grandson’s and my granddaughter’s room? He thought it was just his room. Honest mistake, I did say “your” room, didn’t I?

All three of my grandchildren have always had this room to play and sleep in since they were infants. First it was a pack n play and now we have graduated to a sofa and a reading nook. Life goes on and it is wonderful!

Oh, it is better than I even imagined. I know they must love what you have done for them. Maddie has her own room at my parents house and she and my mom have had so much fun talking about how there will now be a "big girl" bed in there when we visit in June (there was a crib). The colors are great, it is a place that you can use when the kids aren't there as well because of the way you have designed it. And I love the reading nook and the piece of history your son left behind. Fabulous! You have some very lucky grandchildren!

Everything is perfect and the colors aren't juvenile so the grandkids will be just as comfortable there when they are in their teens than they are now. The reading nook is my favorite.

It's absolutely gorgeous! I especially LOVE the reading/sleeping nook! And the fabrics you chose are chic and modern but still kid-friendly. Great job!!

The whole room is beautiful, but the nook stole my heart! Perfect for their ages - it will be poignant the first time you see a gangly teenager still trying to pleat his body in there!

laxsupermom said...

Gorgeous! Well worth the wait. I love seeing how all the fabric choices came together. The reading nook looks like the perfect space for curling up with a book, and even taking an afternoon nap for a kid who's been having fun at grandma's. The blue you used on the P is perfect. I liked the original yellow, but the blue is just right for the room. Can't wait to see the "girly" version. Thanks for sharing.

lizziefitz said...

Worth the wait!!! Fabulous reveal :) I love the fresh color s and fabrics. It flows with your new living room rug;) I keep picturing really primitive rope knots as drawer pulls s, single holes with a single knot? Little and big feet wouldn't have a loop or handle to grip onto? Thanks for sharing.

lizziefitz said...

PS maybe the same rope could be a tie back for the awesome reading nook? ;)

Lizzie, great ideas!! I am going to ponder on this one for awhile, thank you!! KS

My husband is into "details" (and I am SO "NOT"!), and when I say that, he says "Honey, you have to have KIDS FIRST!"... Lucky, loucky children, each and every one... this space, "just for them". is SIMPLY STUNNING, and shows great love because you took the time to think it all out so well first!!! The colors? Soooo HAPPY & CHEERFUL!!!...

And the fact that your son wrote his name on the bed? P*R*I*C*E*L*E*S*S!!!!!

I'm going to try and talk my boyfriend into having a reading nook instead of a study nook in our new house we are currently building.
