Word Verification

I have been wondering what is the purpose of word verification? You know the little box that comes up on some blogs when you leave a comment? At times it annoys me, but since I blog and know how much I love getting comments and feedback I go through the process.

Next Question!! Who thinks up these words? Instead of getting annoyed I started looking at the humorous side of the whole ordeal. Have you ever noticed some of the made-up words they use for us to verify. Some are actually real words, some are so close to real words it evokes a humorous thought of the newly made-up word and some are verrrry close to being profane( Sorry, I am just not going to go there!)

Here are just a few of the words that I thought were funny and I made up my own definition. Do you do that or am I just weird?
  • Speadess: A female speed racer.
  • Frofte: Someone trying say Frosty with a lisp.
  • Crsti: A crusty curtsy.
  • Su-beep: Little Bo’s sister.
  • menniaga: A tiny little Lady Gaga
  • Zingel: A little more than a single but less than a double
  • Elings: A baby “E”
  • Ablingl: Speaking less than one language.
I try to look at life with a sense of humor so this gets me through the process of word verification. I often wonder if I am missing something about the word verification that I need to know since there are so many that have it. I turned mine off in order to make it a little easier for readers to comment. So what are your thoughts on word verification?

I turned mine off but kept moderation on so I still get the choice to publish or not....so far, touch wood, all OK!

I do dislike waiting for it all particularly as our internet is sooooooo slow!

Like you though I love the words and quite often the 'almost' word fits quite well with the post or comment and I end up having a little giggle to myself!! xx

I turned mine off too. If having to type words in a box is going to deter someone...is stupid. Most of the time I can't read the dang things anyway. If anyone post something I don't want ,just dump it.

lol lol You are too funny, Kathysue! I love zingel and ablingl! But the truth is that now that Blogger has built in spam detection for comments, we no longer need it. And Artis1111 is right..just trash unwanted comments! But I am like you...I entertain myself by studying the words! Happy Labot Day, dear friend! Enjoy your time with your family!...hugs...Debbie

I love this post Kathysue. I have been keeping a list of my word verifications so I can do a post on this very subject :o)
One I had was nated - what you say when Nate Berkus has been to decorate your home, "I've just been Nated" (In my dreams).
I'm a bit of a wordie so I'm not bothered by these wv's (unless I'm in a hurry, then they can be a bit frustrating).

I cracked up at this Kathysue! I've also noticed that on blogs from other countries, these made-up words seem to have their "accent"! LOL

I detest word verification, but the "words" can be quite funny. I wonder if you could get away with using them in Scrabble :) Cute post! Hugs, Kat

Only you could come up with all of these definitions. Too cute!!! I hate word verification. I am always trying to spell a real word. Drives me nuts. Hugs, Marty

Kathysue you have me laughing so hard at the Lady Gaga definition. Ha! Love it!

Word verfication is not needed. It is a pain but I suffer through it since I love my blog friends. :)

Too funny! I turned my word verification off in the beginning. Laurie at Bargain Hunting with Laurie suggested it to me because it does irritate some who want to leave a comment--they just might not jump through the hoops. And really, who needs word verification? I think new bloggers still have it because they don't realize it's there and may not know you can turn it off. I like your take on the words though...like "frofte!" You are funny!

Hilarious - especially the mini Lady Gaga!
Word verification does serve a useful purpose (I get soooo much spam in my comments), however, it's certainly annoying for real commenters.
A helpful blogger suggested to me I turn word verification off, but enable moderation for comments older than x days, since the bulk of spam comes in on older posts and most genuine comments are on newer ones. That's working well for me and hopefully for my readers too.

You have me laughing. I love your take on some of the "words". I turned mine off(I think)in the beginning because it can drive anyone nuts!
Very funny post.

I hate word verification too. I comment on ALOT of blogs and it really slows me down and seems pointless to me.....

I don't have it on mine...and (knocking wood here) nothing bad happens! People...everyone...please turn it off! :)
Thanks for shedding some much needed humor on my morning Kathysue!

Kathysue, do you have to type in a word verification on my blog to leave a comment?
It says it's turned off but I'm not sure.

Kathysue - you are a hoot! I took the word verification off of my blog so people didn't have to go through another step to leave me a comment- which I LOVE to receive. I have not had any problens so far.
Have a pretty day!

The purpose is to avoid spam or "bot" comments. I had mine on for a while, but I was getting very little spam so I turned it off.

Love the definitions...uh no, I don't do that:)
