I have been up
to something this last week. I have been making some plans for changes
that are going to be happening in my house!!
It is something I have wanted to do for quite awhile. I have decided to have my existing family room sofa reupholstered.
The fabric I have chosen is one that I actually had on a sofa before the one I have now.
It lasted 10 years, and I never tired of it. But, you know how it is when you get a chance for something new you go for something different.
BIG MISTAKE
on my part, after about two weeks I knew I had made a mistake. Now it
is seven years later, and I am finally getting it changed. (insert own
advice, "Stay true to who you are!")
There are many decisions to make when getting a new sofa, or one reupholstered...
- Style
- How many cushions on the back and the seat.
- Type and style of seat cushions.
- Shape of arm.
- With a skirt or without a skirt
- What type of skirt.
I am having my existing sofa re-worked…..
Right now it is a three cushioned back and seat.
Option #1
OR
Option #2
A bench seat with two cushion back and waterfall skirt.Keep in mind I have a T-cushion sofa with the rolled arm as in the first image.
Option #3
The other option is a Two cushioned back and two cushioned seat with the waterfall skirt……
This is a sqaure armed sofa with square cushions where mine will be a T-cushion and a rolled arm .
The image below is a love seat but this is more like what mine would look like. It has the same rolled style arm and the T-cushion.
Choices:
#1: Bench seat with three back cushions.
#2: Two seat cushions and two back cushions.
#3: Bench seat with two cushions.
Things to keep in mind:
My sofa will be in a blue ticking stripe…
The
cushions will have cord welting in a white fabric so the cushions and
the rolled arm will be outlined in white, similar to the image below,
but no welting on the waterfall skirt top…..
Lots of fun decisions to be made in the very near future!!
I just got my samples today so I am almost ready to order the fabric.
I will be adding my ottoman to the order also, the green chair will be replaced with a white slipcovered chair with a matching one in the other corner of the room…..
This will be reworked also. No more fringe around the bottom, just a crisp clean look.
The
upholstery will be in the same ticking with the same contrast white
welt trim, but on the bottom edge I am going to use a white twill tape
with nail heads as pictured below……
Plus, remember the flu shot that I got on Monday?
Well I have been a bit under the weather with just a slight reaction. I feel as if I am coming out of it now!! Yippee!!
To say that I am excited is an understatement. I plan on taking you all along on my journey as I make progress.
Remember, be patient with me, because I am a planner to a fault!!
If you have an opinion at all please feel free to leave a comment. I just love including my readers in this fun process!!
Plus there is a slight discussion going on at my house about the bench seat vs. the two cushioned seat. If you have a bench seat could you let me know how it holds up over time?

Giving my Family Room a
Fresh, New Look!!
Hi Kathysue,
ReplyDeleteI love option no. 1. I have been checking out this style and actually found one today in a lovely soft gray linen. I'm wanting it.
I know that you will make the right choice and the colors you are using are perfect.
hugs
Sissie
I have made the same mistake, Kathysue. I once ordered furniture and picked out the fabric. When the sectional and chair came I just hated it! I kept it all for 3 years and was able to sell it for a decent amount. I think hubby hated it, too!
ReplyDeleteYou really must be true to yourself and explore all the options. I leaned a great lesson!
Can't wait to see what you choose!
XO,
Jane
Hi Kathy,How exciting for you. I had my sofa recovered about 7 years ago, going from a Victorian print to a solid, I'm still pleased with the choice. The quality of furniture a few years ago surpasses what they make today. I'll be anxious to see what you decide upon. hugs ~lynne~
ReplyDeleteOh how exciting. I can't wait to see it all. Well my two cents worth, I had a bench seat on a sofa for several years and the sad part is most people just come in and sit down in the middle. That part of the cushion gets all the wear. If you have two cushions, people tend to choose one or the other and so the wear seems to be evenly distributed. Just a thought. I found that with one cushin, it became saggy after a few years, so I had to have the inser replaced and it was a really expensive custom sofa. Not a good thing. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteWell this is exciting!! I love the blue ticking and may have to steal it someday. I'm loving the bench seat lately, but that's because I have a 2 year old who likes to hide everything in between the cushions. I think anything you do will look fantastic!! So excited for you!!
ReplyDeletehow exciting. we haven't had our bench seat sofa long enough for me to give you a qualified comment. i do know the guys love napping on it, and i love the extra depth for lounging.

I think I like option #3 the best, but then again I have never focused on sofas and all the various cushion arrangements that are possible. I'm glad my eyes were opened as one day I hope to have our sofas recovered. I love the nailhead trim you are considering. Do you think it is trendy or a classic?
ReplyDeleteYears ago...1968...now that's years ago, a great Designer suggested I have two seat cushions and 4 back cushions!!! It has a wonderful timeless look! When we had the sofa recovered in 1985 and again in 2011 I kept the same look!!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI also have a sofa with the bench seat cushion. It's OK, but hard to flip! Yes, I flip the cushions weekly to even the wear.
But, whatever you do, I know it will look fabulous!!!
I am so excited for you Kathysue.
ReplyDeleteI know how long you have wanted to do this!!!
So exciting. I have no doubt you will make the right decision.
Congrats!
It is going to be BEAUTIFUL
XO
Love the ideas, the blue ticking is so fresh and pretty. Love option 1 best, its classic and timeless. Know whatever you choose will be wonderful and cannot wait to see the transformation!
ReplyDeleteKathysue, if you decide to go with the bench seat check with the manufacture about your stripe fabric. Depending on the width it might only go one direction without a seam....make sure you like it that way. They all look wonderful...I think I like the rounded arm with your style, but I like your selections.
ReplyDeleteEver practical, I have to say, a two cushion sofa basically seats two people. No one wants to sit in the middle on the crack. I like the look of a two cushion sofa though. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Love your blog.
ReplyDeleteIt's a process...good thinking! franki
ReplyDeleteI think the bench seat could be a problem because of the white welting. The bench cushion will get a less uniform look as time goes by and the white line will draw your eye to it and I feel there should be a back cushion for each seat cushion. With two very large cushions the person that ends up in the middle will have two seat edges to sit on which doesn't sound very comfortable. I guess it depends on how often you expect 3 people to sit on the sofa at one time. It's going to be cute! Love the fabric!
ReplyDeleteYour choice #2 is almost exactly the sofa I have had for years. The design is timeless. I had mine reupholstered several years ago in a neutral off white. I can't imagine having anything else. I am so looking forward to being part of this process with you.
ReplyDeleteFun changes coming up! Love the fabric Kathysue. I'm a huge fan of ticking strip. I like Option 1. I take forever to make decisions but in the end realize I end up going with what my gut told me to begin with. Have fun with it and glad you are feeling better. Happy weekend to you!
ReplyDeleteI love that blue and white fabric. Oh, why oh why can't I be more like thee? I have zero patience. When I want something changed, I want it yesterday! I can't wait to watch your new family room unfold. What a talent you have. Love you!
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on the quality of the sofa. I have 2 with bench cushions and I love them, actually prefer them to multiple seat cushions. They stay in place, maintain their shape and look so much neater. I prefer the look of option one, but I think the point of two cushions equals two people and 3 cushions equals 3 people is a good one. I actually have one of each and it just seems the fewer the cushions, the neater looking the sofa...I'd love to have a tight back sofa with no back cushions at all, but not sure how comfortable they are. Perhaps with the right throw pillows? anyway, I'm sure your sofa will look beautiful whichever choice you make.
ReplyDeleteGlad you decided against the bench seat. Love the ticking...it is going to be so fresh! Very "Kathysue"!!
