Black and White done RIGHT!!!

When I saw these two images in House Beautiful I almost gasped. Okay, maybe that is a bit dramatic, but I took time to absorb every little detail.
I love black and white and in my book this is black and white done tastefully……

There is nothing in this room that I would change, I could move right in and feel right at home.

This is such a clever way to display a mural by making separate panels and placing them in individual frames.  It adds so much interest to an already beautiful piece.

I just had to show these two beautiful images. If you would like to see the rest of the house be sure and go to the House Beautiful website.

There is something about black and white that always excites me and draws me in.

Do you have a color combination that always makes you stop in your tracks and makes you take pause?

  1. Very elegant rooms. I love the mural, too. I've never been much of a fan of black, but these pictures could make a convert out of me!

  2. Those rooms are beautiful! I especially love the second with the mural broken up between the frames. Orange and green are my stop-in-my-tracks color combination. Obviously it's a small dose combination, but it's so fresh and fun, I love it.

  3. Wow, that staircase is gorgeous! I love so many color combinations - it would be like choosing a favorite child!

  4. Both rooms are gorgeous and you use black and white in your home to perfection. I think your rooms should be in the magazine. Hugs, Marty

  5. I'm in the process of going B & W throughout my first floor so I love this post. The idea to separate the mural is genius. What a great way to fill a large expanse of wall.

  6. I love the use of the murals in the first room, it makes the room. Very pretty!

  7. I am going black and white in the guest bathroom so wish me luck! It all started with a darling black and white hook from Anthropologie that I spotted last weekend in Seattle (do a search on their website for B & W Hook). Now, I've selected a zig-zag black and white bathroom rug plus a couple of accessories to complement. Then, to drive my husband completely over the edge, I ordered framing for our plain builder-mirror from Mirrormates (with black/silver trim). I'm obviously 'in love' with black and white and decided to indulge that small bathroom that deserves some character!

  8. I loved these images as well. And I love the stair runner and would never have thought to add the pop of green. Love it.

  9. I like dark taupe and black, but I love black and white too. I've wondered about a mural (not that this house has a place for one). I get bored easily and I wonder if I could live with one. These are beautiful.

  12. Well, there's your mural, Kathy! I saved the picture with the framed mural as well... that's on stopped me in my tracks! Couldn't you use that idea in your entry instead of wallpapering the whole thing?

  13. Too funny - I thought of you when I saw these pictures myself. Though it's sad Gideon doesn't have more of his beautiful interiors on his website...

  26. If ever there was perfection using black and white in design, these would be the best examples...love them both...especially the second one (it's the animal print that gets me every time!) Thanks for your great comment on today's post...professional images are truly the only way to go!

  27. Hi Kathysue, I love your black and white examples, although I am surprised to hear myself say that!!! I'm usually a blue and white lover--put that on a magazine cover with a pop of pink or yellow in the photo and I will always buy it! My guest powder and master bath in my current home both came with intense black and white marble (too much and too much $$ to remove and replace right now) and it always makes me sad, but now I feel inspired to try to work with it, especially after scrolling through the photos of your own powder room! Thank you for your blog! Linda

  28. I absolutely adored these two features as well. I have always loved black and white done right- and these are 2 perfect examples! The first image reminds me a bit of Suzanne Rheinstein's fabulous New York apt. - just beautiful!

  29. I always find I am very drawn to rooms using black and white but then when it comes to doing a room for myself I always forget this option and go right for color!

Glad you found my post this morning, I was headed over here to give up a head's up but you beat me to it! I think I would have a very hard time giving up my duvet, but it is a fun topic!

  31. Just beautiful the Black and White and sooo very elegant! I love how neat it looks and yet so fresh as well. I love the dining chairs, I think they're called Hepple White.
Anyway, thank you for sharing, I'd love to make a room black and white one day in my own house.

    XOXO
