Do You Toss Your Throws?

Designer Suzanne Kasler

I have a question for all of you. Do you toss your throws?  You know how you stand back and just toss it on a piece of furniture to make it look as if someone had just gotten up and threw it there .  It is a relaxed comfortable look.  It helps people visualize in their minds how wonderful it would be to sit on that piece of furniture all snuggled up in the softness of that very throw.

Maybe you are in the other camp of those who like their throws nicely folded and placed in a very intentional manner. It will be neatly folded and placed either on the end of a bed or on the arm of a chair or sofa.  I am going to show you some pictures of both methods.  Let me know which way you prefer your throws??? Tossed or Placed
In this lovely and comfortable looking room the throw has been tossed in a gentle manor. I think maybe there was just a little bit of tossing with purpose here. It almost looks too neat to be considered a toss.

This pretty bedroom designed by Lynn Morgan actually has two throws. One on the chaise and another on the bed . These are in the neatly folded and placed camp.  Which way are you starting to prefer?

Whoever did the tossing of the throw here did a great job at making it look as if someone just got out of that chair and tossed the throw on the arm of the chair. This is tossing at its best.

There is no doubt that this is deliberately placed.  This throw is more for decorative purposes to add a punch of color on the all white sofa.  I have had clients use two throws in the same color lined up on the back of the sofa for a color spot.  This is a way to totally change the look of a room  very inexpensively.

I had to show you this picture. It is one of my favorites and  I have had it  in my inspiration file for quite awhile. It is from the  wonderful blog,Three Men and A Lady, written by a very talented homeowner, Michelle.  Be sure and  take a peek at her blog. The transformation of her bedroom is amazing!  It is obvious that Michelle is in the camp of placing her throw deliberately and neatly.  I love the way she took it a step further and actually tucked it under the cushion.  Brillant!

Someone must have been very cold! They have actually realllly tossed two of their throws.

This is a picture from Elle Decor magazine.  First I must say cover me up now!! Love this warm and cozy look.  It has a purposeful tossed look to it.  I can tell that the stylist was keeping this shot nice and cozy, but not messy.

Neat and tidy here! No tossing was done in the styling of this room.

Here we have another neatly placed and tucked throw. Because of its texture and the little bit of rumpling it looks a little more casual.

Definitely tossed!

Very neat and with purpose.

This picture from House Beautiful is showing two gorgeous throws that were placed very intentionally almost to cover up the sofa and make the throws the focal point on the sofa. Very interesting

Designer Jeffrey Bilhuber
We have both examples of tossing and placing in this room .

Now you have seen all of the pictures.  Which camp do you fall in?  The toss and go camp. The toss and straighten it just a little bit camp. Or are you in the neatly placed camp?

I bet you are wondering which camp I am in?  Have a guess?

  1. Hi Kathysue ... another "newbie" blogger here ... so glad to have discovered your fun blog. Love the pics ... let's see, I'm definitely a gentle toss and straighten kinda gal. I like the warm and "welcoming" look it gives. BTW, I love the "blue" pics you posted ... I'm stepping out of my box and redoing our master bath and bed in soothing shades of blues/taupes/creams ... the pics you posted are wonderful inspiration !! Stop by sometime, Becca (Adventures in Decorating)

  3. I prefer the toss and straighten it a little. I have never liked a perfectly staged room. I like the lived in look. Although many of the rooms are very pretty especially the toile pink and green, love that.
I think that the neatly placed works in those rooms though. But give me the rumpled look and I'm happy.

  4. Well, let's see, I imagine our are either the neatly folded or the tossed and tucked kind of girl. I can't imagine that you have a throw just tossed. I am the tossed and folded kind of person. Not folded perfectly neat, but not just tossed with no straightening either. Great post again. Hugs, Marty

  6. Honey, I am a tosser! I toss, don't like it, toss again, pick it up, shake it out, toss again, FINALLY get it like I like it! Son comes in flounces down on said perfectly "tossed" throw. I give up...I tell him, fold that neatly when you are done!

  8. I toss and fold them, depending on the type. Most of mine are the floppy kind, that just do better with a casual toss. What great pics you have collected! They are all inspiring. I had never been to Michelle's blog, it's a good one. Amazing when I think I've seen them all & then along comes another one I've never seen & she's not new either.

    Happy Friday!

  10. Kathysue, I go both ways. I have one thrown over the ottoman in my bedroom and thrown over a chair in the sun room. In my great room I have one neatly folded over the arm of my sofa. Just wanted to let you know your blog is very inspirational. Will get mine going soon. Have a grand baby due any day now up in Nashville so we will be out of town for a few days.

  12. You have such a talent for making us think about why we do the things we do in our homes :)
I've always considered myself a TOSS girl, but after reading this post I've become intrigued with the PLACE camp of thought... it really adds a decorative statement to a couch or chair. The one of your friend Michelle's chair example was really inspirational!!
Thanks friend for another thought provoking post!
(I'm really stumped about what camp you are in :)

  15. I am definitely a placer! This is a funny post. I never thought about it before, I thought the tossing was done unintentionally. I always neatly fold and place my throws.

  16. I'm a neat and tidy, unless I'm using one and get up and leave it tossed for a while.

  17. Oh my goodness...I do have a quirk! And you just found it. I must toss my throws in the great room, bedroom and in the library. Acutally, I usually toss them and if they are not tossed just right, I'll shake it out and toss again until it's just the way I like it. But, the throw in the breakfast room is perfectly folded at all times, when it isn't in use that is. You have a perfect genius, Kathysue, for making us look at ourselves and our homes in a whole new way. I am loving your blog, my friend.

  18. I always thought I was a "toss" kind of girl but I really liked all the neat and tidy pictures of folded throws. Who knew? Cute post! Paula

  19. Well, I like both ways, depending on the 'type' of throw---woven/wool looks best to me folded, knit/rumply seems nicest 'carefully' tossed. LOL
Just found your blog and I think it's great!! Thanks for taking the time :) to post such great photos along with your insights. Hope you will do a few posts on lighting soon :).

  20. Hi Linda, lighting is my weakness, I never seem to meet a lamp I don't like. I do plan on doing a post on lighting. I touched on that subject in one of my past post.Titled,"I see dead corners."Please let me know if there is any particular aspect of lighting that you are interested in. Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it!Kathysue

  21. I'm definitely in the "placed" camp. I think I'm way too type-A for artfully tossed. I'm not one of those people who find beauty in disorder (even if it's more "real"). But I do recognize that everything in its place can look a little bit dull, so I do try and create some sort of intentional assymetry or disarray in a room.

  22. Oh, I definitely toss...and I'm betting that you place! lol Happy weekend...hugs...Debbie

  23. For those that know me well, they have guessed right! I am not a tosser, I PLACE!

  24. Hi KathySue! I place my throws neatly on the beds but I toss my throw in the family room, although sometimes I fold and place it neatly too....Christine

  25. Artfully tossed-actually I detest the look of folded.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love the look of either and I do both. In one room I fold them neatly and place them and in another room I toss and arrange it so its not hanging on the floor. ( I worry about spiders climbing up it, lol) Now theres another quirk. LOVE the pictures you find to put with your posts!!

  27. Definitely "Tossed"...love all the photos - gives me lots of ideas!!

  28. I'm a tosser, but it's into a basket beside a chair. For some reason, polar fleece throws, in football team colors, don't look all that great displayed. :(
It's time to look for a pretty and practical, one in a color that will coordinate with the family room. Thanks for the inspiration and I'm going shopping.
