I Have Something To Admit!

My name is Kathysue, and I am a sheet snob!

I am always on the hunt for the perfect sheet. Sure there are perfect sheets out there, but what is perfect for one is not perfect for another.

If you have done any shopping for good sheets lately you know the cost has gotten out of hand so even if they feel perfect the price puts them out of reach.

What is a girl to do? She keeps looking for the perfect sheets at affordable prices.

Well, as luck would have it I was contacted by a sheet company to do a review on their sheets.

The timing could not have been more perfect since we moved I could only find my one set of what I thought was perfect sheets, and the other not-so perfect sheets were somewhere in a box.

As I said before what is perfect to one person is not necessarily perfect to another person, but this new-to-me sheet company’s name says it all………

What is so unique about this company is the way they put their sheets into categories according to how they will feel.

This was right up my alley because it is all about how smooth, soft, and light they feel when it comes to the perfect sheet for me.

However you might have different requirements to what you want your sheet to feel like.

I was amazed at the degree of research they go to in order to give us the very best quality, and feeling sheet at a decent price.

I actually read a lot of the information on their website before I agreed to do a review.

You all know I don’t advertise anything on my blog that I would not use, or love, so I wanted to make sure this is something I could recommend to my readers.

They make the selection process easy for us by putting their sheets into categories on how they feel. I love that, because after all it is all about how they feel next to our skin, isn’t it?

Did you know that most sheet companies put a finish on their sheets before they are packaged so they will feel smooth to the touch in the store and then when you wash them and the finish is gone, they are no longer smooth or soft?

Who knew, now it makes perfect sense why I have purchased so many sheets, and have been disappointed in them after I washed them. There is none of that with Perfect Linens.

Here are the different categories of the sheets, COOL, LIGHT, SUBTLE….

LIGHT  AND COOL SHEETS:

Light sheets are the result of fiber type and fabric construction. Light sheets are for those who often feel constricted by bedding.

Bare naked perfect linens.
BARE NAKED SHEET : Light weight, cool, and crisp, perfect for a good summer nights sleep.

COOL SHEETS:

perfect linens easy breezy
EASY BREEZY: These sheets will give you a cool nights sleep, percale is airy, not clinging or stuffy or clammy.

2-zero-gravity-v2_1024x1024 perfect linens
ZERO GRAVITY: These are the lightest weight sheets. Ingenious fabric is so light you will not feel weight against your skin. Doctors actually order these sheets for people with overly sensitive skin.

Next time I need a new set of sheets I am going to order one of these three, the decision will be hard because they all sound so perfect to me.

It doesn’t stop there, they have more to select from, but they keep the choices simple, and to the point, all according to how they feel, and their weight on your skin. I love this concept!

SUBTLE SHEETS:

eternally drapeful perfect linens2
ETERNALLY DRAPEFUL: These sheets will follow your every move. Fabric seems to have a sense of its own of where to adjust and where to hang loose.

MY REVIEW OF THE SHEETS
second skin perfect linens
SECOND SKIN SHEETS:  Soft, subtle, smooth are the words I would use to describe these sheets.

I have to say it is all that it claims to be. They were immediately soft to the touch, and so smooth, no roughness whatsoever.

They are described to be smooth like a microfiber, but with the beauty of a 100% cotton sheet.

I don’t know if it is my imagination or not, but I have slept on these sheets for the past three nights, and they seem to get softer to the touch each time I sleep on them.

You know how soft a worn out sheet can feel right before your toe rips through the bottom because you have just worn them out, they are that kind of softness, but with some substance because they are NOT worn out.

I am so glad they asked me to review these sheets, my husband, and I both love them, and I highly recommend dealing with this company if you are on the hunt for YOUR PERFECT SHEET.

A Note From The Founder of Perfect Linens:

Thomas founder of perfect linens”:

So I started Perfectlinens.com. Our mission on behalf of customers is to identify sheets that deliver truly exceptional comfort.

We achieve this through extensive fabric analysis and scientific testing: our Fabric Evaluation and Engineering Lab (FEELab) analyzes sheets down to the microscopic fiber level!

I think customers need help to make better decisions than they can with misleading threadcounts and other “fluffy" marketing.

Perfectlinens.com tells customers how these superior sheets will feel to the touch after multiple washings. This is important because feeling sheets in a store is unreliable as finishes applied to make sheets feel good when new disappear after a few washes.

Looking At The Big Picture

In my years of helping clients design their homes I have been asked, “What is the biggest mistake homeowners make when designing or decorating their homes?”

My answer is always……

“Starting a project without an overall flexible plan!”

I know having a plan goes against the way society seems to run our lives these days.

Everything is quick, and at our fingertip's, or thumbs.

We communicate with texting, or we can get what we want with the push of a microwave button, drive up windows for food and drink, or on the computer with just one click and we can literally purchase just about anything we want.

Blues, Aquas, Whites and Sand

However, when designing, or decorating your home it still takes a lot of thought, and planning to achieve the design in the room, or home that you truly you want.

Lately I have seen so many home decorators buy one piece for their home without thinking of how it will relate to the whole context of the room, or how it will marry to the homeowners individual style throughout the rest of the home.

StarrMiller Interior Design, Inc. traditional family room

When someone buys a piece that is out of context to the rest of the room, and places it in the room, they will soon discover it just is not working.

They often will tend to try, and justify the purchase by trying to make it work by adding more and more  to the room , and making more purchases to make this one new addition work in the room in their minds eye. (Does this sound like anything you can relate too?)

The results can be one big hot mess.(not a technical design term)

Design Chic -

The homeowner now has a home that does not flow, or make sense. The elements do not relate to one another in any shape or form.

Chances are they now have a room, or home they never wanted, or expected, all because of making purchases without a plan.

The word juxtaposition is thrown around by home decorators,  especially when someone adds an element that has absolutely nothing to do with the style, or design aesthetics of the home, or the homeowners individual style or taste.

What I am about to show you is NOT an English lesson, but merely to explain the word juxtaposition

The definition of juxtaposition is…….
the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side; also :  the state of being so placed

Function of Juxtaposition

Writers employ the literary technique of juxtaposition in order to surprise their readers and evoke their interest by means of developing a comparison between two dissimilar things by placing them side by side. The comparison drawn adds vividness to a given image, controls pacing of poem or a narrative and provides a logical connection between two various vague concepts.

In the design world we have chosen to use the highlighted part of the definition of juxtaposition.

When this practice is executed by a professional who knows what they are doing, it is stunning, and something we all would like to emulate.

Unfortunately I feel this word, or technique has been over used, and misused in the design community.

Would you like to learn how to pull together a colour scheme and make your own mood boards? Room Recipes Workshops are coming soon...

It  also seems to have given the less capable home decorator the excuse to put things together that should NEVER be used together in the manner in which they are displaying them in their homes.

Using opposites next to each other takes talent, and a plan otherwise you will have a room that looks like I stated above. A much less impressive statement, simple and to the point……..
A Big Hot Mess!

Personally I am in the beginning of making plans for our new built home that we will be moving into in the Fall.

I already have much of my base elements since we have had a home previously that I had decorated in the style we loved.

In this sunny living room, a white and blue scheme lays a foundation for cottage style. A white brick fireplace and corner built-in hutch bring architectural detail to the space. French doors let in light and open up to the backyard. Gingham and a leafy pattern, both in blue and white, advance the room’s cottage style, while the painting and ship on the mantel infuse beachside flair.

With a new home there will be new challenges, and ones that I am very excited about.

Even with all of my current furnishings I am making plans on how they will look with every single detail I can think of.

There will be no purchasing until I know that my overall plan will remain intact, and in the end I will get the results that I was planning on all along.

Most people will make purchases of items they love, and I am not against that at all, IF these are items of quality, and IF you have always had an affinity towards this particular element.

Where people fall into the pit of making huge mistakes, and not spending their money well is when they go out, and purchase the latest trend, and try to plop it down in their room.

When it doesn’t really work, they soothe their regret by saying, "I like the juxtaposition of this piece with that piece." This will often make the onlooker pause with a big Question mark on their face! The homeowner has made a .........

Big Mistake!!!

Then they try to make it work by adding, and adding more of the same style of the misplaced piece  , and we all know what happens then…..

One Big Hot Mess!!!

We All Need A Plan!!

It is key that you have a flexible, overall plan, as pictured above, and purchase what you truly love.

In the end it is all about staying with what you truly love, and try not to fall into the pit of the TRENDS, and when it does not work try to explain it as  using the technique of Juxtaposition.

Bespoke service
You will notice that I use the words, flexible when I am talking about your overall plan.

When we are making purchases for our homes we will always have to make adjustments along the way. We may have to adjust according to one of these three things….

  • AVAILABILITY
  • AFFORDABILITY
  • PRACTIACALITY
When you think about it, how in the world could you make the proper adjustments if you don’t have an overall plan?

The answer is, YOU CAN'T.

This is where homeowners fall into the pit of adding, and adding elements to try, and make their mistake-purchase work.  The result is a room that they never, ever wanted.

Planning is fun, and it gives one a sense of control when decorating, or designing their home.  It also helps you NOT  to make unnecessary, or costly purchases.

Sometimes I think I enjoy the planning, and sourcing for my home more than anything.

If you have ever wondered how do designers do it????

Possibilities For My New Home's Entry Hall

navy backing with grass cloth overlay.design indulgence: ASO DECORATORS SHOW HOUSE 2015

In my last post I talked about what you could do to make a small entry make a wonderful opening statement for your home.

I mentioned that it would be a good idea to write down just what that opening statement would be if your walls could talk. Here is what I wrote…….

“You are about to enter the place we love, and call home, as you enter I hope you know your are welcomed here. We hope we have made you just a bit curious about how the rest of our home will look by our choices in colors, wall treatments, and the other elements we chose to greet you.  We love beautiful things, but nothing is too precious in our home that it will ever be more important than YOU.  We hope you feel at peace, and relaxed while you visit here.”

Grasscloth Wallpaper Ideas. The grasscloth wallpaper is from Phillip Jeffries. The pattern is called Driftwood - Twilight Blue 6205. #GrassclothWallpaper #PhillipJeffries Terrat Elms Interior Design.
One of the elements that can be added to elevate the look and feel of an entry is wallpaper.

Wallpaper can help set the mood for what your guest are about to see. It can create an atmosphere or introduce the colors, or color that will be in the rest of your home.

You will notice all of the images in this post are of blue and white. These are the two colors that I will use throughout my home. Of course I will vary it's application from room to room.

Imperial Gates Periwinkle, Phillip Jeffries

Today I thought I would have a little fun and show you some wallpaper choices, or ideas that I have in mind for my own entry hall in my new home.

As I said before my entry hall is very small it is only 5ft. wide and 8ft long.

I actually have three possible design ideas for this small area. Once we move in I know my new little cottage will tell me just which treatment it needs.

MOD WEAVE, Navy, T36140, Collection Enchantment from Thibaut

Let me show you some of the wallpaper options I have looked at, and pinned and then I will narrow it down to patterns I think I could live with long term.

This first pattern is actually a pattern I had lined up to use in my other home so I have lived with this idea for quite sometime. ………

BAMBOO LATTICE, Blue, T36158, Collection Enchantment from Thibaut

This bamboo lattice pattern by Thibaut is open and airy and would introduce the blue and white that I use in my home in the form of blue and white porcelain and my blue ticking sofa for the Great room.

I am doing a traditional feel with a  coastal/Nantucket feel  so this could work nicely. It would open up the opportunity to add some tropical touches in the rest of my home as well.

Very dramatic. Whites look very crisp...Navy Grasscloth Wallpaper; David Scott Interiors

Since my entry is so small I would probably use this full wall with a nice crown molding, and possibly something interesting on the ceiling with a traditional looking light fixture in a blackish type finish since I use black and white as a base in my home as well as the blue and white.

This next selection is another direction that will help elevate my small entry, and it will also introduce the blue that will be used in my home…….

$71 Check out this wallpaper Pattern Number: SG2211 from @American Blinds and Wallpaper decorate those walls!
I could use a navy, or I could go brighter with a cobalt blue like this Ralph Lauren grasscloth, both will introduce color and texture for our home as well as set the mood for a Traditional/ Nantucket Coastal feel…….

LWP62741W - Wallpaper | Ralph Lauren Century Club Textures | AmericanBlinds.com

If I do decide to use a blue/navy grasscloth in my entry I will be using it with a lot of white moldings to make it a more open  look as in the picture below……..

I love the texture and warmth this wallpaper provides, such a fan of wallpaper covering
Or like this……

Greg Natale
You can tell by looking at both the above applications that white will be almost as dominant as the blue grasscloth this will help open up the entry hall a bit more visually.

I will order several samples of grasscloth to see which one is more suitable once we move into our home.

With grasscloth you have to realize their will always be slight variations in the color from dye lot to dye lot. It is also recommended to do a reverse strip application to make the seams a bit less noticeable.

I really love the navy lacquered wall with board & batten, the graphic octopus art...and the shade of wood of that sideboard goes so well with navy
With the grasscloth I would choose a traditional type lighting, but will have more options than I feel I will have with the bamboo lattice paper.

Lots to think about, and one decision will lead me to another so it is important that I have a plan so I can end up with the entry hall that I will love, and my guest will feel welcomed when they enter our home.

dark wall...love this blue I painted an entire wall a similar marine blue, around two windows and a french door. It was perfect
As I said in my previous post we have the ceiling, the floors, walls and doors that we can address in our entry hall to set the mood for our home.

In my next post I am going to address the flooring the ceiling and the doors. With each choice of wallpaper each of the elements will differ in order to make a cohesive look. More to come so…….
