I put out an offer to write some blog post on different Christmas decorating schemes requested by my readers.
One reader requested a Woodland Scheme, so the wheels started turning, and I came up with the following plan………
THOUGHT PROCESS
As soon as I say the phrase, “Woodland Christmas,” a vision of small little forest animals in the snow comes to my mind.
GATHERING INSPIRATION
Time to look at nature to become inspired!
Helpful tip:
Remember to look around you, there is inspiration everywhere if you just look
With that in mind, I can now visualize a color scheme of soft beiges, brown with pops of red and white to make it more festive.
COLOR INSPIRATION
Helpful tip:
Find more images to give you ideas for colors, textures and elements.
COLORS:
Brown and white
Soft tans
Pops of red
Time to brainstorm !
You now have your theme, and color scheme! Sit down, and make a list of all the elements that will fit into your design plan.
Helpful Hint:
When making your list of elements keep in mind to vary your textures. Think of elements to bring out the color scheme.
ELEMENTS
Small woodland creatures
Wood
Pine trees and boughs
Pine cones
Red berries
Moss
Mushrooms
Ferns
Snow
Now for the fun part!
SOURCING
(Fancy word for shopping)
Helpful Hint:
When
sourcing keep in mind the color scheme and elements. At this point
just gather different elements. Do not try to put it together in your
mind yet. As you gather more elements a the picture will become more
clear to you. This is where Pinterest really comes in handy. I can just
pin away!!
SMALL WOODLAND CREATURES
These
snowy little creatures are actually night lights! Perfect to place on
the mantel among pine boughs, twinkly white lights, red berries, ferns
and mushrooms for a festive look.
MOSS/MUSHROOMS
Can’t
you just see this as a centerpiece on your Christmas table! Surround it
with pine, and red berry twigs, faux snow and votives and you have a
centerpiece that marries well to your Woodland theme.
WOOD
Personally
I love using monograms and letters in my décor. You could use this as
the center piece on your mantel and work around it with the above
elements.
Simple
disc cut from a tree limb. This can be a no cost element if you live in
a wooded area, but if not you can purchase wood disc.
PATTERN
Helpful Hint:
Choose one main pattern as your base to coordinate other fabrics .
Pillows
and table linens are A great place to add pattern to your decorating
scheme. I found several that I thought would coordinate nicely.
BASE FABRIC
PILLOWS
This sweet bunny silhouette pillow would get an addition added in order to tie it in with the overall design plan.
One VERY LARGE red pom-pom on his tail.
Speaking of Pom-Poms that brings me to the larger than life pom-pom garland.
Remember the discs of wood that said, “Christmas?”
I
would use those disc of wood to spell out Merry Christmas, and put the
letters between each pom- pom for a darling garland on my mantel.
WRAPPING PAPER AND RIBBON
The faux bois wrapping paper can be found HERE
All other wrapping paper and ribbon found HERE
OTHER DÉCOR ITEMS THAT WOULD WORK IN YOUR WOODLAND CHRISTMAS SCHEME……
I
would use a natural linen shade on this darling owl lamp. It is
tempting to add some red pom-poms to the base of the shade, but that
would be just one step too far.
This embossed card would be darling in a natural bark picture frame with a brown matting.
There
are so many different ways to think about decorating, and each of us
will be inspired differently, but I hope my take on a, “Woodland Christmas,” gets the wheels turning in your own design brain!!

What a great post. You are very talented. I'd love to see you do French country at Christmas. Peggy from PA
ReplyDeleteI love the color palette and texture and incorporating the woodland creatures...especially the owl.
ReplyDeleteYou've given me a great place to start...now it's time to start collecting.
I love the color palette and texture! I also really like that you incorporated the little woodland creatures, especially the owls.
ReplyDeleteYou've given me lots of inspiration and I can't wait to start collecting!
Great post, Kathysue. I am a total fan of texture, texture, texture to add interest to decor. I love all the samples you shared, and especially the log discs. Those are my fave. :) xxoo
ReplyDeleteKathysue what I love about this is that you really pull it all together and tie in lamps, pillows etc!

Hi Peggy from PA,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if your are familiar with a blog called Confessions of a Plate Addict, but she does some wonderful French Country decor in her home. She is a retired French teacher and lived in France at one point in her life. Here is a link to her Christmas post.....http://confessionsofaplateaddict.blogspot.com/#uds-search-results
I love this decorating plan. I would totally do it if I didn't already have so many loved Christmas items.
ReplyDeleteNice post, Kathy. You're inspiring me and that's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Beautiful..how you pull everthing together....I am loving this series!!! How about a traditional old fashioned red, green and gold theme? Last year right after Christmas I found beautiful old fashion type ornaments on sale and scooped them up, but that's about as far as I got with an actual theme or other elements! Thanks for such a wonderful blog!!
ReplyDeleteCool! Last year I took my large mirror and placed it on the dining room table...put my two beautiful wooden deer, sled, bottle brush trees. etc....voila...a winter scene. Fortunately, I do have a "side buffet" to place the food! :) franki
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Kathysue! So much to think about...and so many choices. Can't wait for more! ;)
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh this is all heavenly, I'm loving your Christmas inspired posts, it's getting me in the mood and given I won't be able to tackle our Chrissy decorating until about two days before I am enjoying yours.
ReplyDeleteGreat inspiration Kathysue. While pompoms might be a bit too juvenile a pretty jute braid or other trim would be perfect and add just the right pop of red.
ReplyDeleteWOWZA…I love that inspiration! The Woodland Christmas would be stunning….might be my fav.
ReplyDeleteThat is so comprehensive! I really like the beiges and the cream, and red will always be a favorite for bringing warmth in. But I actually might depart from tradition this year and not use red at all. We'll see how long that idea lasts!
ReplyDeleteOooooh, I loved everything you put up in this post. I would love to decorate with a theme like this, but then what would I do with all my "non-woodland colors" decorations? They're cute too.
