It is no secret that I am not a fan of orange. I know- I know it is huge in the design world right now and it has been for awhile. Although it the perfect color for fall decor you will never, and I do mean never, find it in my home.
I have done several post about the elements I like to pull into my own Fall/Winter decor and it always involves a touch of black because that works for my home.
What about those of you that like a softer pallette and neutrals? What are some of the elements you can use for fall?
Well do not fear!! Kathysue is here!!! To the rescue. I have made a little list of elements for you, and I also have some inspirational pictures.
- linen
- brown transfer ware plates
- branches in a vase
- wood logs in a basket
- dried hydrangeas in soft neutrals
- pinecones
- plain white grapevine wreath
- mercury glass candle sticks with cream or linen colored candles
- cable knit throws in cream
- linen covered picture frames
Nice neutrals, but it still has a warmth to it for the fall. Notice all the white/cream pottery. Dried hydrangeas are a great color inspiration for the fall. A nice large basket full of wood. Looks like Fall to me!!
A light colored wall basket full of dried hydrangeas, beautiful!
These are actually plant life from the ocean, but if those are not available how about different configurations and colors of twigs from the yard?
Place them on a linen backdrop, and use all light colored matching frames, and you have your very own fall wall grouping.

Bring in a nice cream shag rug a large basket of wood.
Add lovely warm cream throws and pops of soft brown and you have created another lovely, soft and neutral Fall room. (Home Depot has an area rug like this for under $150 for an 8X10 by Mohawk Frisae shag)
Brown and white transferware plates and platters in a grouping add a warm touch to a white wall. You can find these at Thrift stores and even Homegoods for very little money.
Cover inexpensive frames with linen.
Simple dried hydrangeas in a cream bowl.
A mixture of brown, white and linen pillows. Soft flowing linen drapes to add warmth to the window. Notice the three varied colors, all neutrals, in the baskets on the mantle. Very cool basket on the hearth.
How about finding an old weathered piece of wood and paint your last name on it for a wall hanging.
More stacked wood, but this time it is in an old wooden washtub.
The striped rug in neutrals is another way of warming up the floor. Dash and Albert make wonderful striped cotton rugs. They have a great chocolate ticking on a cream background.

Pumpkins and a hydrangea wreath. In this image they are using the green family but you could use all soft beiges, creams and white in the wreath and the pumpkins.
Speaking of pumpkins, it isn’t fall until we have pumpkins on our porch or in our homes. We are so lucky to be able to get pumpkins in softer colors other than oranges. Gourds are also a nice addition to the mix as pictured below.
Fall can have a softer side to it also by using soft neutrals with a lot of texture. I think I will be using some of these ideas in my own home.
What are some of the softer side of fall elements that you will be using in your homes this year?

i dress in nuetrals almost regularly - i'm designing my bedroom on tghe neutral elements side tho!
ReplyDeletethose tips are great, Kathysue. You are adding Fall thru texture instead of color - a great idea!
ReplyDeleteYou always find the best pictures and always full of such wonderful inspiration. I love them all. I can't wait to see your fall decor. Hope you are having a super day. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteKathysue, I love the use of texture and natural elements- who needs orange to say Fall??!! :)

Where is this place? Can I just go and move in?
ReplyDeleteI so love those white pumpkins this time of year!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathysue
ReplyDeleteI must disagree with you on orange. Personally I love it and use it throughout. But I understand what you are saying and actually blogged about the color orange myself http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/blog/colors-for-home-decorating-orange/
but I must admit your neutral colors are just as warm and inviting. It is fun to see how strongly people feel about orange one way or the other. (did you know that it is one of the most popular colors among mental institution patients...what does that say about me?)
Nice post.

Kathysue,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm not a fan of orange. People look at me like I'm crazy when I say I don't like fall, but it's my least favorite season. But I do love the soft neutrals that your've so shown with your images. Great fall post.
Thanks for stopping by a leaving a little note at my place. Rita
These are all the neutrals and textures that I love. I feel so much more comfortable in rooms without loud pops of colors. I use whites, creams, browns, tans and I'm happy. I also love pinks and soft muted greens.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.

I love it Kathysue! Now that I think of it, I don't have anything orange in my house but come OCT I love decorating my mantel with fall leaves and vibrant orange pumpkins. BUT my dinning room table gets the neutral pumpkins which I just love! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I'm not crazy about orange either, but I do have a room with an orange pillow. Love all these inspiration pics, so pretty, since I'm a fan of some neutrals too. I've got some dried hydrangeas in my DR with my white dishes & it always looks good. I haven't gotten Fall going around my house yet, but this year I might just get some of those real white pumpkins. I adore the light blue ones, wonder where I can find those.
ReplyDeleteI'm not crazy about orange either. I do like it with Halloween stuff, but I prefer white pumpkins when I can find them, my mums are burgundy and I lean towards browns, dark reds and deep rusts and away from the bright orange and yellows as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteKathysue,
ReplyDeleteMy darling this might be the first time you and I haven't seen eye to eye! As you know, I'm absolutely nuts about orange...it is my favorite color to introduce into an otherwise neutral room. I think it's great that you can be honest and say it isn't a favorite of yours because designing a home is personal, not "what's in" (I have loved orange long before it was a trend!) Great post and nice options to not having orange in your home!
The images are so appealing. I am not a lover of orange either. I tend to live in the realm of more muted tones...that is where I am most comfortable and peaceful. I love your suggestions for adding texture and interest.
ReplyDeleteThank you for ideas on the approach of fall with unique options.
Classsssy!! Love the framed twigs and white & green pumpkins are our favorite!
