A WOODLAND CHRISTMAS DECORATING PLAN

I put out an offer to write some blog post on different Christmas decorating schemes requested by my readers.

One reader requested a Woodland Scheme, so the wheels started turning, and I came up with the following plan………

THOUGHT PROCESS
As soon as I say the phrase, “Woodland Christmas,”  a vision of small little forest animals in the snow comes to my mind.

GATHERING INSPIRATION

Time to look at nature to become inspired!

Helpful tip:
Remember to look around you, there is inspiration everywhere if you just look

Ribbet collage Woodland Christmas 2

With that in mind, I can now visualize a color scheme of soft beiges, brown with pops of red and white to make it more festive.

COLOR INSPIRATION

Helpful tip:
Find more images to give you ideas for colors, textures and elements.

COLORS:

Brown and white

Pops of red

Time to brainstorm !

You now have your theme, and color scheme! Sit down, and make a list of all the elements that will fit into your design plan.

Helpful Hint:
When making your list of elements keep in mind to vary your textures. Think of elements to bring out the color scheme.

ELEMENTS

Small woodland creatures
Wood
Pine trees and boughs
Pine cones
Red berries
Moss
Mushrooms
Ferns
Snow

Now for the fun part!

SOURCING
 (Fancy word for shopping)

Helpful Hint:
When sourcing  keep in mind the color scheme and elements. At this point just gather different elements. Do not try to put it together in your mind yet. As you gather more elements a the picture will become more clear to you. This is where Pinterest really comes in handy. I can just pin away!!

SMALL WOODLAND CREATURES

These snowy little creatures are actually night lights! Perfect to place on the mantel among pine boughs, twinkly white lights, red berries, ferns  and mushrooms for a festive look.

MOSS/MUSHROOMS

Can’t you just see this as a centerpiece on your Christmas table! Surround it with pine, and red berry twigs, faux snow and votives and you have a centerpiece that marries well to your Woodland theme.

WOOD

Personally I love using monograms and letters in my décor. You could use this as the center piece on your mantel and work around it with the above elements.

Simple disc cut from a tree limb. This can be a no cost element if you live in a wooded area, but if not you can purchase wood disc.

PATTERN

Helpful Hint:
Choose one main pattern as your base to coordinate other fabrics .

Pillows and table linens are A great place to add pattern to your decorating scheme.  I found several that I thought would coordinate nicely.

This sweet bunny silhouette pillow would get an addition added  in order to tie it in with the overall design plan.

One VERY LARGE red pom-pom on his tail.

Speaking of Pom-Poms that brings me to the larger than life pom-pom garland.

Remember the discs of wood that said, “Christmas?”

I would use those disc of wood to spell out Merry Christmas, and put the letters between each pom- pom for a darling garland on my mantel.

I would use a natural linen shade on this darling owl lamp. It is tempting to add some red pom-poms to the base of the shade, but that would be just one step too far.

This embossed card would be darling in a natural bark picture frame with a brown matting.

There are so many different ways to think about decorating, and each of us will be inspired differently, but I hope my take on a, “Woodland Christmas,” gets the wheels turning in your own design brain!!

"WINTER BIRD" DECORATING PLAN FOR CHRISTMAS

I thought it would be fun to do a few post on Christmas decorating plans for you to access.

For today’s Christmas theme I chose to work off of what I already have as a base for 2013 Christmas for my own home.

By showing you this, it will give you an idea of how to add different elements to a base to achieve a totally different look.

Remember my Base?……..

Ribbet Edit 2013 Christmas Inspirationa

Now let me show you how I can use this same base with a different theme……

Ribbet Edit Christmas birds

In the above image you can see the wrapping papers and a Winter bird theme starting to form.

Now let’s make a list of elements that could possibly tie in with the above look.

ELEMENTS:

Birds
Branches With or Without Berries
Birch logs
Pine boughs
Red berries/Cranberries
Snow
Baskets

Next comes the fun part!!

SOURCING!

Sourcing is just a technical word for,“SHOPPING!” It just sounds a bit more professional, don't you think?

BIRDS
As you have already seen in the above image I found some darling Winter bird artwork on Etsy….

I think this is going to look great in a simple black frame placed on a mantel or the wall.

BRANCHES AND BERRIES
This one can be a no-cost element by going out in your yard and snipping off branches.

But if you want red berries on your branches you can find them HERE!

BIRCH LOGS

I love the square birch covered vases.

Nice looking 9in zinc lined birch covered vases.

If you don't have access to white birch logs you can actual order a stack of 6 logs  from the above source.

Here you they used birch logs, an old shutter and poinsettias.

I would use a wooden box in place of the shutter, and the poinsettias would be replaced with natural greens and red berries with white twinkle lights. Big, massive and so easy to do!

PINE BOUGHS AND BERRIES/CRANBERRIES

BASKETS

Natural, Fresh, and cheerful. I would use solid red velvet ribbon to add more contrast.

If you don’t have a basket that is large enough Terrain has done all the work for you.

I purchased this a few years ago when it was on sale and I am so glad I took advantage of the sale. They go quickly so if you want one you had better order it now.

GIFT TAGS AND WRAPPING PAPERS

Don’t forget you can add more of the above elements in  the form of gift tags and wrapping paper as well.

Etsy is my go-to source for gift tags, but you Diyer’s could make your own.

Tips to Remember:
When working with a theme try to keep your elements down to 3-4 elements. It is easy to get very carried away, and then you create a cluttered look instead of an easy flowing creative look.

Be strategic where you place your themed décor. Don’t have it EVERYWHERE in your rooms. One or two spots will keep it fun and interesting.

YOU WON'T GET THIS OFFER EVERYDAY!

If you are having a hard time coming up with ideas this year. Leave a comment  on what you would like me to tackle for you, and I will do my best to write a post that will be helpful to you as well as my other readers.
